De La Soul at Manchester Academy

I photographed De La Soul last night. Thought they were onstage at 9pm, but when I arrived I was informed that they weren’t on until 9.30pm. As it turned out, they didn’t actually start until 10pm. Not happy. However, you can’t stay angry with De La Soul for too long. A loveable bunch, they exude charm and effortless stage presence. During the second song, came the first truly surreal moment in my time as a gig photographer. Trugoy halted proceedings and insisted that me and the other two photographers put our cameras down and dance like everyone else. Not quite sure what to do, we followed his orders and started putting our hands in the air and, dare I say it, waving them around like we just didn’t care. In front of 2000 people.
I’ve never felt whiter.
